Your net worth is everything you own (cash, investments, retirement accounts, home equity, cars) minus everything you owe (mortgage, loans, credit cards). This tool compares that figure to what U.S. households in your age group are worth, using the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finances (2022).
The Fed publishes the median and average net worth for each age band, but not a full percentile curve. We fit a standard distribution to those two published figures and read your percentile off it, so the result is a reasonable approximate band (“roughly the top 30–40% for your age”), not an exact official statistic.
Net worth naturally rises with age, so comparing within your own age group is far more useful than comparing against everyone. Being below the median early on is normal — what matters is the trend over time.
